Where his career stood
When this collection came out, on 21 December 2022, Ilia Topuria's record was 13-0, 5-0 in the UFC, and he was not yet a champion. He was coming off a win over Bryce Mitchell by submission at UFC 282: Blachowicz vs. Ankalaev, 10 days earlier. His next fight was UFC Fight Night: Emmett vs. Topuria, against Josh Emmett, 185 days later: he won by unanimous decision.
What 2022 Donruss Optic UFC is
Optic is Donruss in chrome: the same Rated Rookie design as the paper card, with a chromium finish and a colour ladder of its own. The first standalone UFC edition reached hobby on 21 December 2022, per Panini, in boxes of 20 packs of 4 cards, one autograph and 20 inserts or parallels. Ilia Topuria has two cards: the Rated Rookie #110 and the Dominators #17 insert, 28 versions in all.
- The Rated Rookie logo is printed. It is one of his 2022 cards that says so on the card itself; the rookie by release order remains the Prizm one, as explained on the Ilia Topuria rookie cards page.
- No autograph. Ilia Topuria is not in Rated Rookies Signatures or Opti-Graphs.
- 17 numbered and 11 unnumbered, from Red /199 to Gold Vinyl 1/1.
Which box each one comes from
- Hobby: Pink Velocity /79, Black Velocity /39, Gold /10, Gold Vinyl 1/1 and the Black Pandora, the ones Panini names in its announcement.
- First Off The Line (13 December, Panini Direct): an extra autograph with the Purple Stars, which exist only on signatures; there is no Purple Stars #110.
- Retail: Photon in store boxes and Purple Velocity /59 in blasters. Three “Velocity” that are not a tier but three channels.
- Panini Direct: the White Sparkle, of #110 and of Dominators, which was never in a box.
What gets confused
- Velocity is not a rarity, it is a family. Pink /79 and Black /39 are hobby; Purple /59 is blaster.
- Dominators #17 is an insert, not another version of the rookie: it has its own ladder, from Red /99 to Gold Vinyl 1/1.
- Optic was Panini's third Ilia Topuria rookie of 2022, after Prizm and Select; carrying the logo does not make it the first.
